Jonathan Anderson is trying his hand at publishing with Loewe. As a tangent to its Fall/Winter 2018 women’s collection, the brand printed and produced its own range of literary classics. These cloth-bound hardcovers were a gift for the guests at the brand’s runway show and a fitting extension of the collection’s gist.
Loewe describes its Fall/Winter 2018 collection as a midcentury nod to the meeting of organic and industrial, and a treatise on the appearances of introversion. Jonathan Anderson designed a range of cotton plissé dresses, flared coats and capes in fabrics like gabardine, shearling, and jacquard. All that, combined with the inescapable craftsman angle of Loewe’s leathers – used primarily to enforce structure, and affect embellishment. It’s an imaginary stretch, but books do fit into the narrative of an introvert’s creative interior life.
As for the books themselves, they are beautifully bound in smoked grey cloth – humo, the colour is called, which is Spanish for smoke. It’s one of Anderson’s subtle rebranding moves with M/M Paris – and it lends itself well to publishing. The covers repurpose vintage and archival fashion photographs by Steven Meisel – the brand’s ongoing photographic collaborator who has lensed every campaign and lent his talents to a host of projects by Anderson.
The titles in the series were selected by Jonathan Anderson and include:
Dracula, by Bram Stoker;
Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes;
The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde;
Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad;
Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert; and
Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte.
These tomes are limited edition, naturally, and available in a very small run. Only select stores in the world will be stocking it, and in Singapore they'll be at the Casa Loewe flagship.
The Loewe Classics will be available at Casa Loewe (#01-10 & 11) in Paragon (290 Orchard Road) from August 2018.
