It's almost comical how straightforwardly Phoebe Philo names her bags. The Belt Bag is known for the adjustable belt that goes around its face; the Box bag because its simple silhouette resembles a box; and the Cube bag thusly because it’s literally a leather cube with handles. So don't pat yourself on the back for guessing what the Big bag might be.
You’d be forgiven for thinking the Big Bag looked familiar - elements from Philo’s previous successes were incorporated into this mammoth (expandable side vents from the Phantom, adjustable leather straps from the Belt) then blown up. Measuring at 41cm by 41cm for the large version, we’re guessing it’s probably just about big enough to fit your essentials - and then some. For the more conservative – nay, practical – of us, there is a medium sized version that measures 31cm by 31cm and a small version that’s 25cm by 25cm. Of course, since we’re talking about Céline, the bag is crafted with buttery smooth calfskin and lined with suede, although different leathers and fabrics that range from classic luxury fare (pebbled leather and double-faced suede) to the funky (raincoat rubber) were introduced for Spring 2018.
Being made entirely out of leather, there’s a chance the Big bag might come to be known as the Big and Heavy bag. But its heftiness should be no deterrence to Céline troopers. Full leather bags have the ability to age with grace while maintaining its structure, helping this bag pull its own weight (sorry). The Big bag’s oversized handles allow for shoulder carry, like it was styled on the runway. That’s one way to relieve your wrists from a potentially expensive weight.
Céline’s choice to construct this bag with only three leather parts shows a real confidence against wear and tear, and the lightly-treated leather shows off the supple material, allowing it to gradually form a patina to show other younger, trendier bags who’s boss. The Big bag, obviously.
With its size comes a matching price tag - this is the most expensive Céline bag to date (not counting the exotic skins, of course). You’re getting a lot of bag (or is it bang?) for the buck, though, and it should sort you out for many occasions to come. Weekend getaway? Check. Moving places but can't afford a truck? Check. Overcompensating for what's left of your bank balance? Check. In Céline’s defense, size does matter.
The Big bag retails for SGD$3500 (small), SGD$6800 (medium) and SGD$8400 (large).
